Vacations are supposed to be a time when you can kick back and relax. But if you live with diabetes, this can be difficult.

You can’t just pack up your things and go, you have to think about how you can maintain your routine so you can live a healthy and active life. Luckily, in terms of exercise, you can stay active even when you’re out of town.

Here are some exercises you can do without equipment, nearly anywhere you go.

1. Walking

Walking is one of the easiest activities that you can do while on vacation. It is a great form of exercise mainly because you don’t have to think about it and you can do it anywhere. You only need a good pair of walking shoes, which you should already have.

Try skipping the shuttle for short distances, or make it a point to take leisurely strolls while sightseeing. You can even bump it up to brisk walking or easy hikes if you’re prepared. If you like the outdoors, walking may be all the exercise you need while on vacation.

2. Swimming

If there’s a pool, beach, or other body of water where you’re going, pack a bathing suit. Aside from getting a chance to catch some sun, swimming can be a low-impact form of exercise.

When swimming, water not only acts as resistance as you move through it, but it also cushions your body because of buoyancy. Unlike walking, for example, swimming puts minimal weight on your joints and can even relax your muscles.

Just remember to make sure that a lifeguard is on duty before you swim, and let them know of your condition. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

3. Dancing

If you’re looking to have something more exciting while getting your daily workout, dancing is another activity you can do, especially if you enjoy going out at night.

Dance floors are common in places with lively nightlife. Chair dancing is also an option for those who aren’t very mobile. If dancing outdoors is too exciting or too loud, you can always dance in the privacy of your room. All you need is some good music, a bit of space, and maybe even a partner to dance with.

4. Climbing Stairs

While some may see stairs as an enemy, they can be a great way to exercise. Climbing up and going down the stairs will help build strength in your legs, and can help you maintain bone strength and proper posture.

You don’t need to climb 500 steps to the top of a mountain. Just skip the elevator every once in a while, especially if you’re only going up or down one floor. Just take it slow if you have weak knees, hold on to the railing, and always wear non-slip shoes to avoid accidents.

5. Stretching Exercises

Although it’s important to build up your strength, stretching exercises are just as important to maintain mobility and relax your joints and muscles. Stretching is easy to do, and only needs space.

Depending on what part of your body you want to stretch, you can do your exercises while standing or while on the floor. If you’re on a vacation that requires a lot of walking, don’t forget to pay extra attention to your feet and legs to keep your circulation going and to avoid cramps.

Staying Active is Key

There’s nothing wrong with being laid back while on vacation. In fact, it is being frowned upon when people supposedly on vacation take it on themselves to continue answering emails or monitoring reports. However, it is also important to stay active while lounging on linen beds or beach bumming. Your medications and food supplement for diabetes could only take you so far.

Keep these exercises in mind so you can stay in good shape no matter where you go. However, before doing any sort of strenuous exercise, remember to consult your doctor, and always go at your own pace.
